Tanks, Armored Vehicles Arrive in Shipment From Europe

PHNOM PENH - Cambodia has imported more than 100 tanks from Europe to bolster national defense, officials said Tuesday.

“Those are really important,” said Defense Minister Tea Banh, who declined to give details on the kinds of tanks and the total number. “From 100 to 200 tanks” were imported from European countries, he said. “These are for improving our capacity, for training and for a time when it is necessary to use them,” he said.

A senior defense official told VOA Khmer the military shipment included tanks, armored personnel carries and material, arriving in the port of Sihanoukville on Tuesday.

Cambodia purchased nearly 100 tanks from Eastern Europe in 2010, during a border standoff with Thailand near Preah Vihear temple.

Defense officials said Cambodia must continue to improve its defense capabilities. That has meant a lion’s share of the national budget goes toward defense spending. In 2012, the government allotted $350 million of $2.5 billion budget toward defense.

These equipment should be located in Bavet and the Vietcong border. The silent encroachment is the main issue. Thailand is only doing it for the show of its military mighty among the Asian countries. Thailand has plenty of land already stolen from Cambodia. What Hun Sen should consider is step down from power and yield to another strong Khmer leader that is willing to take Vietnam to Court for robbing Khmer land and forcing Cambodia to accept while they were in charge of the country. By the International Law, it's purely illegal and Cambodia can cancel all those illegal agreements. That's the only way to let them know that we will not tollerate savage act from Vietnam. Hun Sen, please step down and you will be held as Hero. If you wait any longer, your legacy will be nothing left to honor.

This is a wonderful and postive event for our Kingdom and people, We have finally upgraded our national defense which is critical towards the protection of our soverignty among neighboring countries. On another note, We can critisize everything negative about our country but we as brothers and sisters must move foward together so we can better our kingdom, Doesnt matter what political party you support, the end result of this should be that we support each othe because we are khmer. -Meas Khemerak.

What kind of defend are these weapons used for? Every day, hundreds of Vietnamese flock into Cambodia and the govt do not see anything.
